Tin Hau, the Goddess of the Sea, is revered by fisherman and anyone whose livelihood is tied to the sea. There are many of these Tin Hau temples in Hong Kong; however, the Tin Hau Temple at Yung Shue Wan on Lamma Island has an interesting feature that is different from most others in Hong Kong. Temple buffs might notice that the stone lions sitting at the gate of Lamma Tin Hau Temple are suspiciously Western in appearance. Apparently, when the original Chinese-style lions were damaged in 1960, the mason hired to replace them specialized in Western-style stone lions. The result is a fitting motif for Lamma’s East meets West character. Inside the temple is a tablet dating back 100 years. This is an interesting temple to visit once you are here on the island. Every year on the 23rd day of the third month of the lunar calendar, islanders celebrate the birthday of Tin Hau with Cantonese opera performances, dragon boat, and sampan races.
